What Is There To See On The Costa Del Sol?

Hiding in the shadows of Marbella and Torremolinos, Fuengirola is one of the Costa del Sol’s most popular resorts. With more than 8kms of beaches, all lined with bars, sports clubs and restaurants, it’s no wonder than 25% of the town’s population comes from other countries (mainly Europe, Morocco and Argentina) to enjoy the Mediterranean climate. Some of these visitors decide to live permanently there, but the majority comes just to rent Costa del Sol accommodation for rent for a fun filled holiday.

The town blends well its historical sites and open parks with its largely urban character. Although there are some high-rise blocks of apartments in the Costa del Sol - many towards the sea-front - narrow streets can be found with many Costa del Sol villas available to rent.

Those interested in the town’s history, you should visit the local museum which displays evidence of the town’s roman influences. For example, there is the well known “Venus of Fuengirola” which is one of two sculptures found in a roman villa discovered during the 1960’s.

There is also the medieval Moorish fortress which can be found at the foothills of the mountain range behind the town to the south. The castle of Suhayl, or Sohail, remained an abandoned ruin until renovations began in 1995 and in 2000 the interior of the castle was completely renovated and it begun to host festivals and concerts throughout the summer. Additional landscaping was completed in 2002 and the castle is now one of the highlights of Fuengirola’s cultural and historical scene.

If it’s the music that draws you to Fuengirola then you won’t be disappointed. Whether you’re into hip-hop, pop, rock or flamenco you’ll find plenty to entertain you after the sun goes down. In fact during the summer months the resort’s nightlife is positively manic. Try to fit in a siesta because the partying here starts late and keeps going till dawn!

Most of the action is centred around the marina and the seafront promenade so this is a good place to rendezvous with friends for a sundowner. Enjoy a leisurely meal in one of many excellent restaurants which line the seafront because there’s no point heading off to the clubs until much before midnight.

For more of a family night out, head out to the Tivoli amusement park at Arroyo de la Miel which stays opens till 1am. You can enjoy a meal there and there are regular flamenco performances, Wild West shows and hit songs from the big musicals.

However, if you’re more interesting in the big club scene, Millenium is where you get the latest UK house music, the Funk Club Funk is for hip-hop and Maxi’s Disco, is favoured by “oldies” that enjoy rock and roll and 60s and 70s music. Heaven’s Gate Disco is the favoured nightspot of the young and trendy foreign visitors.

Fuengirola has a thriving gay scene and so does the nearby resort of Torremolinos. Bar Kudos in Los Boliches is open seven nights a week and is a good starting point along with Stuart’s gay bar near the port which has live cabaret every Friday and karaoke on Saturdays.

The Costa del Sol provides such a great mix of nightlife and real tourist attractions that it caters for different types of visitors. It’s the perfect place for those just wanting to unwind and have some real fun!
