Greece

Greece, which is officially named Hellenic Republic, is situated in southeastern Europe, at the southern end of the Balkan Peninsula. It borders Bulgaria, Albania Macedonia and Turkey and has access to the Aegean Sea and the Ionian Sea. Bearing the heritage of Ancient Greece, the Roman and later the Byzantine Empire, Greece is considered the birthplace of democracy and Western philosophy, as well as the political science and the mathematic principles, the Olympic Games, the Western literature and drama. A member of NATO and the European Union, Greece is using euro as its currency. Its capital is Athens and the other major cities include Thessaloniki and Patras, Volos and Ioannina, Larissa and Heraklion.

It is its ancient culture that Greece is most famous. The shores of Greece’s Aegean Sea saw the emergence of the first civilizations in Europe, namely the Minoan and the Mycenaean. After the internal struggle between Spartans and Athenians, all parts of Greece were united under the rule of Alexander the Great and aimed at the defeat of the ‘eastern threat’ of the Persians. Alexander led the Greeks to a victorious campaign which established a Greek Empire and introduced a new era in world history, the Hellenistic.
